7 Reasons Visitors Fall in Love with Solaramo Cay

By A. Heartwood Some people arrive on Solaramo Cay looking for sunshine. Some arrive looking for adventure. Many arrive because they simply need a break from real life. What surprises them is that they often leave with something much more valuable. Again and again, visitors tell the same story. They came for a holiday and somehow found themselves falling in love with the island. Not just with the beaches. Not just with the sunsets. With the feeling of the place itself. Here are seven reasons why Solaramo Cay captures hearts so easily. 1. The Sunsets Never Get Old Most destinations advertise their sunsets. Solaramo Cay lives through them. Every evening, visitors gather along the marina, at Jack's Place, on private balconies, and along quiet stretches of beach to watch the sky transform into shades of gold, pink, orange, and deep purple. No two sunsets ever look exactly the same. Even locals stop to watch. 2. Life Moves at the Right Speed One of the first things visitors notice is ho...

Locals Claim Gerald the Turtle Is Older Than the Island

Every island has its legends.

Some have ghost ships.
Some have buried treasure.
Solaramo Cay has Gerald.

If you’ve taken one of Lucas’s boat tours, there’s a very good chance you’ve already heard about him. Usually somewhere between the dolphin sightings and Lucas explaining why sunscreen “kills the vibes.”

Gerald, according to local lore, is an ancient sea turtle who has apparently been swimming around Solaramo Cay since before anyone can remember.

And depending on who you ask, Gerald is either:

  • a perfectly normal turtle,
  • the oldest living creature in the Caribbean,
  • or the unofficial guardian of the island.

Lucas insists Gerald recognizes his boat engine specifically.

Jack from Jack’s Place claims Gerald once stole a tourist’s sandwich directly from the swim platform and “looked proud of himself afterward.”

Tavi says Gerald understands music and surfaces whenever he sings near the marina.
(Locals are divided on whether Gerald surfaces because he enjoys the music… or because he wants Tavi to stop.)

The First Gerald Story

The oldest version of the story comes from fishermen who lived on the island long before the resort existed.

They claimed a massive turtle would appear near the cliffs before storms rolled in. Some swore Gerald guided lost boats back toward shore during rough weather.

Others insist he simply likes attention.

Either way, Gerald has become part of Solaramo Cay folklore.

Visitors now ask about him almost as often as they ask about the sunset cruises.

Can You Actually See Gerald?

Surprisingly… yes.

Not guaranteed, of course. Gerald is still a turtle, not an employee of the tourism board.

But sightings happen often enough that many visitors leave convinced the stories might actually be true.

He’s most commonly spotted:

  • near the reefs during snorkeling trips,
  • around the marina early in the morning,
  • and occasionally near the private cove south of Jack’s Place.

Lucas claims Gerald prefers calm people.

Jack claims Gerald prefers tourists who drop food.

Nobody really knows which is true.

The Gerald Experience

The strange thing is that nearly everyone who sees Gerald describes the encounter the same way.

Quiet.

Peaceful.

Like the island slows down for a minute.

Maybe that’s why people love the story so much. Solaramo Cay has a habit of making people believe in things they normally wouldn’t.

Second chances.
Unexpected romance.
Fresh starts.
Ancient turtles.

Final Verdict

Is Gerald actually older than the island itself?

Scientifically speaking… probably not.

But around here, facts tend to matter a little less than stories.

And Gerald makes for a pretty good story.

If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll meet him yourself on your next boat trip around Solaramo Cay.

Just don’t bring sandwiches near the water.
